In light of the new jobless claims report released this morning, it is time, actually way past time to face some very simple truths: What you are doing is not working, Mister President.
It amuses me to no end that everyone seems to think the President gives people jobs. That couldn’t be much further from the truth. The fact is that while government can hire or fire people to work in the various departments, Washington DC does very little to affect the vast employment markets directly.
The only things any President or government can do is set conditions for the markets. We have just signed into law the massive Health Control Bill which adds several layers of regulation and complexity to an already unsteady employment picture. What company in their right mind would hire a single new worker with the weight of higher taxes, mandated health insurance, and hefty fines, not to mention completely unrelated mandates depending on the type of business? “Unexpected?” What the hell did they think was going to happen?
It’s really simple, Washington, to turn things around. There are two things that can be done to get us going and growing within one business quarter.
(Normally, I would say that when your opponent is destroying themselves, just stand back and let them self-destruct. In this case though, I have no faith that the idiots in office would ever even consider this advice seriously, so I don’t worry about them taking credit for it. And if they do, well, as a country we will be better.)
First, that monstrosity of a Health Control law needs repealed. No company will hire people, at least not quality people, when upwards of half or more of what they can afford to pay is going for “benefits” and taxes instead of salaries.
And second, but most importantly, cut corporate taxes and capital gains taxes. Preferably to zero, but no more than 4-5%. That will immediately open up a lot of working capital for business to expand, and encourage a lot of companies to relocate to this country. Once corporations make their headquarters in the US, they will need new office buildings, factories, warehouses, and staff, and those people will need places to live and cars to drive to work.
You do this, and you will see employment rise rapidly, the US economy begin to expand again with healthy growth, personal incomes will rise, and government tax receipts will increase.
Stop with the idiotic thinking that Washington needs to somehow pass some umpteen bazillion dollar program to “create” jobs. It just doesn’t happen that way. They need to cut the taxes, drastically cut the spending, and get the hell out of our way.
